Lisa Yuskavage, PieFace (2008).
The new work by Lisa Yuskavage show us the artist at her best. Her figures are clearer, in sharper focus than the vaseline-over-the-lense we’re used to seeing from her. Though the subjects still posess the orotund sexuality that is Yaskavage’s trademark, they don’t seem as vacant as those in her older work. She’s also obstructed the faces in many of her new paintings (with a cream pie in certain cases!) creating situations that vacillate between the erotic, the unlesttling or out-and-out slapstick.
